Burnham Overy Staithe is a quiet harbour on the north Norfolk coast, the start point for a walk across salt marshes to one of Norfolk's most remote and beautiful beaches. The walking here captures the vast, open character of the Norfolk coast.

The Route

Start from the harbour and follow the boardwalk across the salt marshes. The marshes are threaded with tidal creeks and home to thousands of wading birds. Emerge onto the dunes and walk along the beach to Gun Hill, a small headland. The beach is vast and usually deserted. Return via the same boardwalk route.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off-lead on the beach year-round. Leads are advisable on the salt marshes during bird nesting season (April-August). The beach has no restrictions. The tidal creeks provide swimming and paddling. Be aware of tide times as the marshes can flood rapidly.

Practical Information

Small car park at Burnham Overy Staithe (fills quickly in summer). No facilities beyond the village. The Hero pub in Burnham Overy is dog-friendly. Check tide times before setting out.
