The walk from Stiffkey along the North Norfolk coast follows the Norfolk Coast Path through vast salt marshes to the beach at Stiffkey Freshes. The marshes are a designated National Nature Reserve and one of the finest coastal landscapes in England.

The path follows the edge of the salt marsh with views across the creeks and channels to the sea. The marshes are famous for Stewkey Blues - the local cockles gathered from the mud. Birdlife is abundant, particularly during migration seasons.

Dogs are welcome on the coast path and beach. The walking is flat and the sea air is invigorating. The village of Stiffkey has a dog-friendly pub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Stewkey Blues?

Stewkey Blues are cockles gathered from the mud flats at Stiffkey (locally pronounced Stewkey). They have a distinctive blue-grey colour and are a local delicacy.

Is the salt marsh walk safe?

The main path along the marsh edge is safe. Do not venture onto the marsh itself as the creeks fill rapidly with the incoming tide. Always check tide times before walking along the coast.
